1974

Edwin G. Foulke, Jr. (B.A. Political Science) has been named to the NC State Board of Visitors. Under the previous administration, Foulke was the Assistant Secretary of Labor for Occupational Safety and Health. He is currently a partner with Fisher & Phillips LLP, a leading national labor and  employment law firm. He works with the firm's Workplace Safety and Catastrophe Management Practice Group in Atlanta, Georgia. After earning his undergrad degree here, Foulke earned his law degree from Loyola University and a Master of Law (Labor) degree from Georgetown University Law School.

1983

Sr. Mary Shea (BSW) has been a missionary/social worker in the mountains of Chepnyal, Kenya for the last two years among the Pokot people.  Sister Mary lives with three other Catholic Sisters who are involved in education and women's development.  They are also involved in a water project, working to bring wells to provide clean water to the mountain people.  sl1633Wyahoo.com

Leslie Covington (BSW) is the Youth Programs Director at Kerr Family YMCA in Raleigh, NC. 

Michael Jason Houser (B. A. Political Science) is the Director of Legislative Affairs for the North Carolina Department of Revenue.  He is the chief Lobbyist and Liaison between the Department and the North Carolina General Assembly.  Michael and his wife Jennifer welcome their first child, daughter Avery Elizabeth Houser on May 18, 2008.  housermike@gmail.com

James Madison (Matt) Lail (B. A. English) is once again on the board of the N.C. Association of Government Information Officers (NCAGIO) as the membership chair. Along with several others, Matt also recently started an English Alumni Society group, thanks to the Alumni Association. Robin Eason Strickland (B. A. French) is a solo-practitioner (Law Office of Robin E. Strickland) in Raleigh.  Robin represents juveniles alleged to be delinquent and parents whose children are alleged to be abused, neglected and/or dependent and adults who are alleged to be incompetent.  Robin lives in Clayton, NC with her husband and two daughters.  robin@robin-strickland.com

1999

Matthew Vollmer (M.A. English) has published his first book, a collection of stories titled Future Missionaries of America (MacAdam Cage Publishers, 2009). The book received a starred review from Library Journal and has received advance praise from many writers, including author Lee Smith, who said, “There are large cracks in America, and a person can fall right down into them, and never be seen again. Many of Matthew Vollmer’s characters are on the verge of doing that. … I have never read any stories like these. Quite often, these stories are saying the unsayable.” Vollmer and his wife, Kelly Pender (M.A., English, ‘00) both teach in the English Department at Virginia Tech. His stories have appeared in Paris Review, Tin House, Epoch, VQR, Colorado Review, Gulf Coast, and Portland Review, among others. He is a four-time nominee for the Pushcart Prize and has been short-listed twice for Best American Short Stories.

Joy Krabill (M.P.A.) completed her Ph.D. in Public Policy at The George Washington University in Washington, D. C. in August.  Her dissertation addressed the oversight of the Medicare program and analyzed how the civil False Claims Act is used to monitor Medicare providers.  JLKraybill@aol.com

Dan Crawford (B.A. Political Science) and wife Sarah (B.A. Political Science '03) welcomed their first daughter to the world, Emily Grace Crawford. Caroline Walters (B.A. History, M.A. Public History, '04) is the University Records Officer at the University of Virginia. 

Sarah Ward (B.A. Political Science) moved to Wichita Falls, Texas in August of 2008 is and currently working as the Employer Relations Coordinator in the Career Management Center at Midwestern State University. Sarah is responsible for recruiting employers for on-campus events and to encourage them to hire MSU students/alumnni.

Harold Jacobson (M.A. Public History) is the manager of the Roanoke Canal Museum and Trail for the City of Roanoke Rapids.  Harold also serves as the chair for the history section of the North Carolina Museums Council.

2003

Cindy Michelle Spurlock (B.A. Communication, English) graduated from UNC Chapel Hill in May 2009 with a Ph.D. in Communication Studies and a doctoral minor in Cultural Anthropology. Cindy accepted a tenure-track position in the Department of Communication at Appalachian State University, and will begin teaching in August.

2004

Greg Whitt (B.A. Communication) has left his position as operations manager at Joyner Visitor Center at NC State to pursue his passion for percussion. He has been leading rhythm events in the Raleigh area for more than eight years and is launching Drum for Change in partnership with the Conduit Center for Creative Change to offer facilitated drum circles and creativity courses for individuals and groups as a means of team building, cultural and diversity education, and for community and wellness programming. gregory@drumforchange.com

Thomas W. Teague Jr (TW) (B. A. Laura Lunsford (Ph.D, Psychology) has won international accolades for her dissertation about the value of mentoring. “Mentoring and talent development: Doctoral students and their Proteges” was named best dissertation by the International Mentoring Association. Lunsford, who formerly directed the Park Scholars Program at NC State, is now an assistant professor of psychology at the University of Arizona South.

Jamie Argetsinger (B.A. Political Science) is a Title 16 Claims Representative, interviewing, collecting evidence and adjudicating claims for benefits under Title 16 of the Social Security Act. Fred Mayhew (Ph.D, Public Administration), has received a national award for his dissertation related to North Carolina Smart Start. Mayhew was recognized with the Michael Scriven Dissertation Award for Outstanding Contribution to Evaluation Theory, Methodology, or Practice by the Interdisciplinary Ph.D. in Evaluation (IDPE) program at The Evaluation Center, Western Michigan University. Mayhew is now an assistant professor of public administration at Northern Illinois University.

2009
